BIG JOHN is actually one of the oldest denim companies in Japan, and
because of that, the brand holds a special nostalgic importance for many
of its people. When the company was founded in 1940, they were a simple
manufacturer of school uniforms and workwear in Kojima, Okayama. There
was no clue that they would become Japan's premier Denim company,
designing iconic jeans for over 70 years and establishing a reputation
for durable and trustworthy quality.
Pouring its know-how accumulated in sewing work wear and uniforms
originally in Kojima into denims, Big John has become a Japan-made jeans
brand representing Kojima.
In the ‘50s, BIG JOHN imported American used clothing and
re-worked the clothing to fit the Japanese body. It was a bold move, but
one that gained them an unbelievable amount of popularity. In the ‘60s,
they lead the vintage and outdoorsy style that flourished in Japan, and
are credited with producing the first pair of new, “pre-washed” jeans
in history. Keeping with their tradition of quality, whilst taking a
provocative approach to style, has enabled them to be a major
contributor to the evolution of Japanese fashion. Big John
was the first brand who actually reproduced Levi's jeans in Japan.
During the sixties the brand even used fabrics by Cone Mills to produce
their jeans with for some time. In terms of history and brand awareness, Big John is to Japan what Levi's is to the US.
Skilled TAKUMI Japanese Artisans and Craftsmen combined their efforts to create the ideal Japanese Denim collection RANSEI which translates into "A person who studied Indigo thoroughly."
The new RARE collection is a modern high quality concept that preserves the heritage and spirit of the brand.
