BIG JOHN is actually one of the oldest denim companies in Japan, and because of that, the brand holds a special nostalgic importance for many of its people. When the company was founded in 1940, they were a simple manufacturer of school uniforms and workwear in Kojima, Okayama. There was no clue that they would become Japan's premier Denim company, designing iconic jeans for over 70 years and establishing a reputation for durable and trustworthy quality. Pouring its know-how accumulated in sewing work wear and uniforms originally in Kojima into denims, Big John has become a Japan-made jeans brand representing Kojima.

In the ‘50s, BIG JOHN imported American used clothing and re-worked the clothing to fit the Japanese body. It was a bold move, but one that gained them an unbelievable amount of popularity. In the ‘60s, they lead the vintage and outdoorsy style that flourished in Japan, and are credited with producing the first pair of new, “pre-washed” jeans in history. Keeping with their tradition of quality, whilst taking a provocative approach to style, has enabled them to be a major contributor to the evolution of Japanese fashion. Big John was the first brand who actually reproduced Levi's jeans in Japan. During the sixties the brand even used fabrics by Cone Mills to produce their jeans with for some time. In terms of history and brand awareness, Big John is to Japan what Levi's is to the US.

 Skilled TAKUMI Japanese Artisans and Craftsmen combined their efforts to create the ideal Japanese Denim collection RANSEI which translates into "A person who studied Indigo thoroughly."

Naked & Famous x ONI JAPAN “Weird Guy” Denim

Okayama, Japan’s cult denim brand ONI DENIM is known for their famed designer Mr. Oishi, an ex-Levi’s Japan employee who has grown as a well-respected denim fanatic and expert over the years. The five-pocket tapered leg jeans are designed with 14 oz selvedge heavy denim twill in this classic indigo wash. Details include copper rivets, black enamel coated buttons and hidden back pocket rivets. The branding is a mix between ONI DENIM’s iconic Japanese demon masked logo and Naked & Famous’s leather patch logo branding. Limited Edition Blue in Green and Samurai collaboration "Shadow" series, a two part production using Samurai's S710 silhouette and cut for the first time in their 17oz selvage "Zero" denims in Indigo and Black. This second edition is the Black Shadow model which features the Black Zero denim, Black topstitch detailing, Black leather patch, Black rivets, Jin model iron plated buttons, and Jin model Ecru color front pocket bags.

The selvage line contains intertwining strands of Red and Silver lamé which symbolize the bleeding passion of the samurai's soul and the gleam of the razor sharp sword which he possesses. Jahitan rantai/chain stiching juga menggunakan benang yang telah di dye hitam.

These jeans are raw. The longer you keep from washing them, the more special and personalized they will get. many denim enthusiasts dont't wash raw jeans for the first 6 months. enjoy!

This tough fabric was so difficult to weave; our Japanese suppliers said they had to battle against the looms to make it happen. The shuttles were loaded with such heavy and rigid black weft yarns that it struggled to make each fill pass. As a result this created “a war within the loom” and the vibrations (loom chatter) were intense! This is all evidenced by the beautifully unique and irregular character of the resulting denim fabric.

Then came the challenge of sewing this crazy denim into jeans. Our factory friends in San Francisco took on the challenge, and with some hard work and dedicated expert mechanics they were finally able to figure out a way to properly adjust each machine in every process to make it work.

Another challenge was installing the 15oz leather patch which can be as thick as 10mm!!

Review - Samurai Jeans - 17oz LTD ED S5000GX-M Water Element Model

The "Go Rin No Sho" series is a collection of 5 different models presented by Samurai Jeans, each one based on the teachings of the famous samurai warrior Miyamoto Musashi found in his written text on survival strategies entitled "The Book of Five Rings" or "五輪書 / Go Rin No Sho" as it's known in Japan. Musashi broke his teachings down into five sections, or "books", in connection with the five physical movements of life as referenced in many ancient Eastern philosophies and thought; Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Void. And in this order Samurai will release a new jean featuring weft yarns and pockets bags dyed with a natural dyestuff representing each of these five elements.

 

The S5000GX-M is the second in this series and features weft yarns and pocket bags dyed with Natural Indigo to represent Musashi's second book, "The Book of Water".
